The ratio of coffee to water sets the ceiling on how strong a cup can taste, before grind, time or temperature ever enter the picture. Every method on this site has its own ratio pages — a “light,” “balanced” and “strong” preset, each with the exact grams and millilitres worked out — because a French press at 1:15 and a V60 at 1:15 do not behave the same way, and neither behaves anything like an espresso, whose “ratio” measures the liquid that comes out of the puck rather than the water poured in. Type "coffee to water ratio" into a search box and you'll get a dozen confident, mutually contradictory answers — one page insisting on 1:15, the next on 1:18, neither explaining why they differ or what happens if you use the wrong one. That contradiction isn't a mistake anyone is making; it's the honest shape of the subject. A French press, a V60 and an espresso machine extract coffee in three genuinely different ways, at three genuinely different ratios, and a single number can't describe all three. This site exists to give you the real number for the method you're actually using, and to explain the handful of variables — grind, time, temperature — that matter more than the ratio once the ratio is right.

Why a ratio site, and not just a list of recipes

Most brewing guides hand you one recipe and move on. That's fine until the recipe doesn't work with your beans, your water, or your taste, and then you're stuck with no way to adjust it intelligently. The ratio is the lever that actually controls strength — how much dissolved coffee ends up in the cup — independent of how long you brew or how hot the water is. Once you understand that a "balanced" pour-over sits around 1:16 and a "strong" one moves toward 1:15, you can nudge your own cup in either direction on purpose instead of guessing.

Extraction and strength are not the same thing, and conflating them is where most bad advice comes from. Strength is how much coffee is dissolved in your cup, set mostly by the ratio. Extraction is how much of what's dissolvable in the grounds actually came out, set mostly by grind size, contact time and water temperature. A cup can be strong and under-extracted (thin, sour, more coffee than usual but still tastes unfinished) or weak and over-extracted (bitter and hollow despite using less coffee). The fix pages on this site are built around that distinction, because "use more coffee" is terrible advice for a cup that's actually over-extracted.

How the site is organized

Methods are the pillar guides — the physics of each brewing method, the equipment, the technique, and the mistakes specific to it. A slow V60 drawdown and a stalled French press plunge are different problems with different causes, even though they can taste similar in the cup.

Ratios are the quick-answer version of the same 18 methods: the numbers alone, worked out at three strength presets, with a calculator on the page. If you already know your method and just need the grams, start there instead.

What this site won't do

It won't tell you that one method is objectively the best, because the honest answer depends on how much time you have in the morning and whether you'd rather clean a French press or a paper filter. It won't sell you the idea that a $300 grinder is required to make a decent cup, and it won't pretend a $30 dripper can't make one either. Every ratio here is a starting point backed by where specialty-coffee guides generally converge — see the methodology page for the actual ranges and where they diverge — never a single "correct" number dressed up as one.

It also won't pad a page to look thorough. If a method genuinely only needs three real adjustments explained well, that's what its guide has — not five padded out to look like ten. A grinder recommendation only shows up where it genuinely fits the method being discussed, always with a plain disclosure, and never as a wall of affiliate links standing in for an actual answer.

Questions people still ask before they start

I don't own a scale — can I use tablespoons instead? You can get close, but "close" is the problem: a tablespoon of coffee varies by a few grams depending on grind size and how tightly it's packed, which is exactly the kind of drift that makes a ratio unreliable. A $10-$15 kitchen scale that reads to 0.1g removes the single biggest source of a cup tasting different two mornings in a row for the same recipe.

Which method should I start with if I don't own any equipment yet? A French press forgives more mistakes than almost anything else here — coarse grind, a simple steep, no filter technique to get wrong — and it's usually the cheapest way in. A pour-over dripper rewards more precision sooner, but it's a reasonable second purchase once the ratio and grind basics feel automatic.

Why does espresso's "ratio" look nothing like every other method's? Because it measures a different thing. Every other ratio on this site is coffee-to-water-poured-in; espresso's is coffee-to-liquid-that-comes-out, since some water stays behind in the puck. A 1:2 espresso ratio and a 1:16 pour-over ratio aren't comparable numbers, even though both are called "ratio."

Does a stronger ratio mean more caffeine? Not directly. Strength (how much dissolved coffee is in the cup) and caffeine content don't move in lockstep — grind, contact time and even the specific beans matter as much as the ratio. The caffeine estimator gives a typical range by method and serving size rather than treating "strong" and "caffeinated" as the same word.

I followed a ratio exactly and the coffee still tastes off — now what? The ratio controls strength, not extraction, and a cup can be correctly strong while still tasting sour or bitter because of grind size, water temperature or contact time. Run the symptom through the dial-in troubleshooter rather than changing the ratio again; it almost always names something other than "more coffee" or "less coffee."

Do these ratios still apply to decaf or flavored coffee? Decaf, yes — the ratios here are about extraction physics, which don't care whether the caffeine was removed first. Flavored coffee (an oil-coated or infused bean) can extract slightly differently and is worth treating as its own experiment rather than assuming an unflavored bag's exact numbers carry over unchanged.
